I look for what the idea is already trying to say.

Look
Find the tension, the detail, or the feeling that makes an idea worth staying with.

Edit
Take away what is unnecessary until the character of the idea becomes clear.

Compose
Give each element a reason to be there, then let scale and space create the rhythm.

Leave Room
Not everything needs to be resolved. Space can carry meaning too.
