The Internet Is Becoming Visual Again

As interfaces become more expressive, the web is returning to image, motion, atmosphere, and editorial thinking.

The next generation of personal websites may feel less like software and more like designed environments.

The early web was visually strange because it had not yet settled on a language. Then interfaces standardized. Cards, dashboards, grids, navigation bars, and familiar interaction patterns made digital products easier to understand.

That standardization was valuable. But personal websites have different responsibilities.

Personal websites can be expressive

A product interface needs predictability because it helps people accomplish tasks. A personal portfolio can take more risks. It can use unusual pacing, expressive typography, cinematic imagery, or interactions that would be unnecessary in a productivity tool.

This creates space for the web to behave more like an editorial medium.

Visual does not mean decorative

A more visual web should not mean adding effects everywhere. Images can communicate context faster than paragraphs. Motion can show relationships. Spatial composition can create hierarchy before the visitor reads a single sentence.

The visual layer becomes useful when it carries information.

Technology makes the canvas stranger

Modern browsers can support experiences that once required specialist installations. 3D, responsive animation, real-time media, variable typography, and generative systems are becoming increasingly accessible.

The interesting question is not whether we can use them. It is what new forms of storytelling become possible because they exist.

The personal site as an environment

The strongest personal websites may feel less like resumes and more like places. There is an archive, a current state, a body of work, a voice, and a way to get in touch.

That is a useful direction for creatives because the website can communicate the practice before a meeting ever happens.
